Charlie Mead

Science Advisor at IO Informatics

Dr. Charlie Mead has over 35 years of experience in various aspects of healthcare informatics including standards development, a venture-funded point-of-care system in home healthcare, large-scale enterprise service-oriented architecture development, and a 3-year role as Director of the Graduate Program in Nursing Informatics at University of California, San Francisco. He began his work in computable semantics while still in medical school, leading the ambulatory electrocardiogram algorithm development and pattern recognition efforts at Washington University in St. Louis. He has participated in a number of standard organizations -- most notably CDISC and HL7 -- for over 20 years, and has served on the Board of Directors of both organizations.

He served as the Chair of the HL7 Architecture Board from 2008-13 where he led the development of the ANSI standard Service-Oriented Interoperability Framework Canonical Definition (SAIF CD), and is a Thomas Erl/Arcitura-certified Service Oriented Architecture Analyst and Architect. For the past two years, he has served as a CoChair of the W3C Healthcare Life Sciences Work Group.

His current work is focused on the use of Semantic Web tools and technologies for both standards (metadata) and data representation across the Translational Medicine Continuum, as well as use of these technologies in SOA to enable run-time contract interface negotiation and automated workflow configuration.
