Els Steenhagen has a varied and extensive work experience. In their most recent role, they are currently undertaking research on plastic pollution prevention on Curaçao as part of a research project for Green Phenix. Els is also involved in consultancy, mediation, research, and project management. Els is the co-owner of Hoek & Steen Legal, where they focus on helping individuals navigate relationship crises and divorce. Additionally, they serve as an Island Innovation Ambassador, working to advance innovation and drive sustainable change in island communities worldwide. Previously, Els was a project manager for Human Rights Defense Curacao and a research assistant at the Newcastle Institute for Energy and Resources. Els has also held positions in the WA Country Health Service, Waardi Limited, Brood met Spelen | XO Food Group, Gemeente Zaanstad, and Boomerang Agency, where they had roles in learning and development, emergency operations support, program assistance, advisory, cabinet and external affairs, and operations and sales support management.

Els Steenhagen's education history is as follows:

In 1998, Els Steenhagen attended ArtEZ University of the Arts for a Bachelors degree in Education and Arts, which they completed in 2003.

In 2007, Els Steenhagen studied at SRM Mediaplanning, although no specific degree or field of study is provided.

Els Steenhagen then pursued further education at the University of Newcastle in 2018, where they obtained a Graduate Certificate in Social Sciences - Social Change and Development.

Continuing their studies at the University of Newcastle, Els Steenhagen completed their Master's degree in Social Sciences - Social Change and Development from 2019 to 2020.

In 2023, Els Steenhagen attended The Lime Tree, where they earned a Professional MfN Mediator certification in Mediation.
