Arlene Lawrence

Director, Occupational Health, Safety & Environment at JAMAICA CUSTOMS AGENCY

Arlene Lawrence has had extensive work experience in the field of occupational health, safety, and environment. Arlene started their career in 2001 as an Environmental Outreach Officer at Discovery Bay Marine Laboratory. From there, they worked as a Project Manager for Solid Waste Management at Friends of the Sea (local NGO). In 2002, they joined Sandals Resorts International as an Environment Health and Safety Manager, where they held various roles until 2005. Arlene then worked as an Industrial Hygienist at Alumina Partners of Jamaica from 2005 to 2009. After that, they joined Sandals Resorts International again as an Environment Health and Safety Manager from 2009 to 2011. Arlene Lawrence then moved to Urban Development Corporation (UDC) as an Occupational Health and Safety Manager from 2011 to 2016. Currently, they serve as the Director of Occupational Health, Safety & Environment at Jamaica Customs Agency starting from 2016.

Arlene Lawrence has a diverse education history. Arlene obtained a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree in Public Health from the University of Technology, Jamaica in 2012. Prior to that, they completed a Master of Science degree in Natural Resource Management- Integrated Urban & Rural Environmental Management from The University of the West Indies in 2000. In 1998, Arlene obtained a Diploma in Occupational Health, Safety and Environment from the Jamaica Institute of Management (JIM) and a Bachelor of Science (Bsc) degree in Zoology from The University of the West Indies.

In addition to their academic qualifications, Arlene Lawrence has also obtained several certifications. Arlene is a Certified ISO 22301 Business Continuity Strategist and a Certified ISO 3100 Internal Controls Risk Analyst, both from the Certified Information Security institution, obtained in January 2019. Arlene is also a Certified Occupational Safety Specialist from the Alliance Safety Council, obtained in December 2017. Other certifications include a Certificate in Industrial Hygiene Management from Columbia Southern University (USA) in 2008, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Certified Trainer: Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry from the University of South Florida in November 2007, Certified Occupational Hearing Conservationist from the Council for Accreditation in Occupational Hearing Conservation in October 2005, Certified Food Safety Manager from the Caribbean Epidemiology Centre / National Restaurant Association in July 2005, and Certified Asbestos Abatement Supervisor and Inspector from The Environmental Institute (USA) in March 2005.
