Bethany Nowviskie

Dean Of Libraries, Chief Academic Technology Officer, And Professor Of English at James Madison University

Bethany Nowviskie serves as the Dean of Libraries, Chief Academic Technology Officer, and Professor of English at James Madison University since July 2019. In addition, Bethany holds an elected leadership role as the Steering Committee chair for VIVA, the statewide academic library consortium, from July 2021 to June 2025. Bethany's previous experience includes positions as Distinguished Presidential Fellow and Executive Director of the Digital Library Federation at the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) from August 2013 to August 2019, and various roles at the University of Virginia, including Research Associate Professor of Digital Humanities, Special Advisor to the Provost, and Director of the Scholars' Lab. Bethany also led the Association for Computing and the Humanities as Immediate Past President and has held multiple academic duties at the University of Virginia including teaching and project management. Bethany holds a Ph.D. in Literature with a focus on Textual Studies and Humanities Computing from the University of Virginia, as well as an MA in English Education and a BA in English and Archaeology.
