David Pugh

Principal, Registered Architect at Jasmax

David’s focus is on civic buildings that help to define their context. In his words, “buildings that have a positive impact on the wider community and respect their setting.”

With over 25 years’ of architectural experience behind him, David has had a varied and successful career. He worked in London at the architectural firm of celebrated British architect Sir Frederick Gibberd, as well as working locally on the critically acclaimed Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tāmaki and award-winning B:Hive Office Building at Smales Farm. These experiences armed David with a particular expertise for creating quality urban spaces.

David believes that considered analysis of the client’s values and needs, together with early design clarity are essential for delivery of a successful project. He has enthusiasm for the creative potential of each project within its wider context and the insight it will give to the character and form of the building. David is also interested in using materials, components and careful detailing to express the craft of building.

At Jasmax, David is focused on arts and cultural projects as well as commercial projects. He is an expert in planning, development and delivery of complex projects around clear concepts and single-minded vision, often with challenging timeframes, constraints and budgets. He is a respected team leader, and maintains close integration with a client’s wants, needs and values.

David has specialised skills in the design, planning and delivery of projects and understands the importance of well organised and collaborative project teams. His roles have included working with client groups, establishing briefs, coordination of JV partner’s information, concept design, design development, contract documentation and site observation.

Now working on Hamilton’s new Waikato Regional Theatre, David is seizing the opportunity to transform this part of Hamilton and reconnecting the site with the iconic Waikato River.
