Derek Lin has a diverse range of work experience. Derek is currently working as a Mechanical Design Engineer for Joby Aviation. Prior to this, they worked as a Mechanical R&D Intern at Lumafield where they developed industrial design concepts, generated positioning mechanisms, and developed machine vision algorithms. Before that, they were a Product Design Engineering Intern at Tesla, where they owned the design for high-volume consumer electronic parts and worked cross-functionally with various teams. Additionally, Derek has experience as a Mechanical R&D Intern at KERN Microtechnik GmbH, where they gained valuable research and development skills. Derek also served as the Team Captain and Mechanical Lead for Waterloo Formula Electric, where they oversaw powertrain, chassis, and accumulator aspects of the vehicle. Derek also has experience as a Production Engineering Co-op at Zaber Technologies, where they designed a system using machine vision and solved production issues through tool and jig design. Derek was a Hardware Engineer Co-Op at IGNIS Innovation Inc., where they worked on test fixtures for OLED displays and implemented a PLC-automated system. Derek started their career as a Shop Apprentice at Alec's Automotive Machine Shop, where they worked on engine components and optimized the layout of the machine shop. Lastly, they have experience as a Rowing Instructor at the Vancouver Rowing Club and as Trap Help at the Vancouver Trap & Gun Club Inc. Overall, Derek Lin's work experience reflects a strong background in mechanical design, research and development, and cross-functional collaboration.

Derek Lin pursued their Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Mechatronics, Robotics, and Automation Engineering at the University of Waterloo from 2017 to 2022.
