Mikhaela Neequaye

Research Assistant at John Innes Centre

Mikhaela Neequaye has a diverse range of work experience in research and scientific roles. Mikhaela currently works as a Research Assistant at the John Innes Centre, where they conduct lab-based experiments to study floral scent evolution and provides technical and administrative support. In 2020, they also worked as a Research Technician at the 2Blades Foundation and as a Cleaner at NIC Services Group Ltd.

Prior to this, Mikhaela completed a PhD project as a PHD Student at the Quadram Institute and the John Innes Centre, focusing on the genetic basis of glucosinolate production in high glucoraphanin broccoli lines. During this time, they also coordinated and executed the first DEFRA regulated and approved CRISPR field trial in the UK.

Mikhaela has also gained experience in communication and coordination roles, including an internship as a Communications Intern at Minerva Communications UK Ltd, where they were responsible for coordinating talks and exhibition stands at ESOF2016. Additionally, they worked as a STEM Ambassador at STEMNET and as a Demonstrator at the University of Leicester Botanic Garden.

Mikhaela has also been involved in education, working as a GCSE Science Tutor at Beaumont Leys School and participating in a research project as a Genetics Society Summer Studentship at the Twell Lab, University of Leicester.

Mikhaela Neequaye completed their education at the University of East Anglia from 2015 to 2019, where they earned a Doctor of Philosophy - PhD degree in Plant Genetics. Before that, from 2012 to 2015, they attended the University of Leicester and obtained a Bachelor of Science (BSc) (Hons) degree in Biological Sciences (Genetics). In addition, they obtained an Advanced Level French Diploma (Distinction) from the University of Leicester in January 2013.
