Thomas Eng

Deputy Director, Host Engineering at Joint BioEnergy Institute

Thomas Eng currently serves as the Deputy Director of Host Engineering at the Joint BioEnergy Institute since October 2021 and is also an Affiliate Faculty member at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Eng has been a Biologist Research Scientist at Berkeley Lab since February 2016, working within the Biosciences Area, and has held the position of Bioinformaticist Project Scientist in the same institution. Prior experience includes a postdoctoral fellowship focused on membrane protein activity in Escherichia coli at the Joint Bioenergy Institute, along with a Junior Specialist role at UC Berkeley where Eng was an NSF Graduate Research Fellow. Early career experiences include working as a Technical Assistant I at the Whitehead Institute/MIT, conducting research on DNA replication in Drosophila melanogaster. Eng holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a PhD in Molecular and Cell Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. Educational background also includes a diploma with honors from The Bronx High School of Science.
