Dr. Joel Roos, MD, MBA, MHCDS, CPE is the Vice President of International Accreditation, Quality Improvement and Safety for Joint Commission International. In this role, Dr. Roos is responsible for developing and leading the overall strategic direction of JCI’s accreditation and certification programs. Dr. Roos provides oversight in updating and developing new international accreditation standards as well as lead efforts to enhance the international accreditation process.
Throughout his career, Dr. Roos has been dedicated to improving patient safety and the quality of care for active military personnel and veterans around the world. Most recently, Dr. Roos was the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary for Health for Quality, Safety and Value at the Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Washington, D.C. In this role, he provided national leadership in the development and implementation of health care policies and programs to improve patient safety and quality of care. He also served as the VHA representative to The Joint Commission, National Quality Forum and other national advisory boards. Prior to this role, Dr. Roos was the commanding officer at Naval Medical Center San Diego, where he oversaw the 268-bed multispecialty hospital. At the hospital, he provided strategic guidance for more than 6,500 military and civilian personnel and 25 graduate medical and dental education programs. While in command, Dr. Roos created numerous international training and teaching partnerships to include Japan, Vietnam, Australia, and Mexico. He also was responsible for the safety and ethical conduct of more than 300 clinical research trials per year involving organizations across the country.
Dr. Roos earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and performed his Emergency Medicine training at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He subsequently earned his MBA in Health Care Management from Brenau University, Gainesville, Georgia and an MS in Health Care Delivery Science from Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire. In his free time, Dr. Roos enjoys international travel, photography, aquarium keeping and fly fishing.
