Nazir Afzal OBE serves as the Independent Chair for The Nursing and Midwifery Council, conducting an independent review of the organization. Additionally, Nazir holds the position of Chancellor at The University of Manchester and serves as the International Justice Advisor at Adam Smith International. Afzal also holds several patron titles at various organizations such as Karma Nirvana, JAN Trust, and Freedom Charity, working to protect vulnerable women and children. Nazir is the Chair of Corporation at Hopwood Hall College and has been in this role since September 2018.

Since 1993 Karma Nirvana have supported thousands of victims of Honour Abuse, Disownment and Forced Marriage in the UK. We operate a nationwide helpline, run education awareness programmes and providing training to the NHS, Social Services, Schools and Police Forces throughout Britain. The charity was founded by author, activist and survivor Jasvinder Sanghera CBE. Jasvinder was instrumental in persuading the UK government to criminalise Forced Marriage in 2014. Her books include 'Daughters of Shame', 'Shame Travels' and 'Shame' which was a Times top 10 best seller.
