Richard Cowburn

Head External Engagement Office at Karolinska Institutet

Richard Cowburn has extensive work experience in the field of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases. Richard started their career in 1988 at Karolinska Institutet, where they served as an Associate Professor, readership, and laboratory head. During this time, they led a research team focused on understanding the contribution of altered signal transduction to the pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease. Richard also managed collaborative projects with DaiNippon Sumitomo Pharmaceuticals to identify novel drug targets for Alzheimer's disease. In addition, Cowburn held administrative responsibilities as the division head of Experimental Geriatrics and oversaw multiple laboratories and PhD employment and education.

In 2006, Cowburn joined AstraZeneca, where they held various leadership positions. Richard served as a section head, where they recruited key competences and built the in vivo Neurology Section. Richard also led a team of senior scientists and directors as a team leader, responsible for delivering the scientific strategy for Neurology project generation. Cowburn later transitioned to the role of senior scientist and team leader at AstraZeneca and MedImmune, leading a cross-functional team of senior disease experts in defining the strategy for new biological effect areas related to Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases.

Recently, Cowburn joined Karolinska Institutet again as the Head of External Engagement Office, responsible for external partnerships and corporate partnering. Richard'swork experience showcases their expertise in neurology research, leadership, and collaboration with industry partners.

Richard Cowburn received their education in the field of Neuroscience, Biochemical Pharmacology, and Biological Sciences. Richard completed their BSc in Biological Sciences from the University of the West of England in 1984. Following that, they pursued an MSc in Biochemical Pharmacology from the University of Southampton in 1985. Richard then furthered their studies by completing a PhD in Neuroscience at Imperial College London from 1985 to 1988.
