Serrano is the current Director of Mathematics for grades K-12. He is also completing his Doctorate of Education (Ed.D) at the University of Pennsylvania where his research and interests focuses on innovation, risk-taking, and professional development for teachers and learners.
Prior to working at KIPP, Serrano consulted and worked with over 500 educational leaders and students from around the world to build their capacities in imagining and enacting a better education system for students. He also worked, taught and supported Mathematics education in public schools in Atlanta, New York City and Philadelphia for the past 10 years.
Originally from Brooklyn, New York, Serrano graduated from Northeastern University with a BSBA (Bachelor of Science in Business Administration) and Relay’s Graduate School of Education with a Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary Mathematics. Serrano relies a lot on bell hooks (teaching to transgress) and Paulo Friere (Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Pedagogy of Freedom) as anchors for his philosophy on education.
