Fernando Barrios

Fernando Barrios has a diverse work experience spanning various industries and roles. Fernando is currently working as a Technical Product Manager at Layer 6 AI since October 2022. Prior to that, they worked at General Motors, where they held multiple roles. Fernando was an Artificial Intelligence Product Owner from April 2022 to October 2022, a Chassis Performance Enhancement Engineering Scrum Lead from May 2021 to April 2022, and an Algorithm Design & Development Specialist from January 2020 to May 2021.

Before joining General Motors, Fernando worked at the University of Waterloo as a Mechatronics Vehicle Systems Lab Student Researcher from May 2018 to December 2019. During this time, they focused on research related to Urban Electric Vehicles and machine learning for autonomous vehicles. Fernando gained experience in diagnosing high voltage systems, designing and implementing low voltage systems, and control system design.

Fernando also had an internship experience at General Motors as a Research and Development Engineering Intern from June 2019 to August 2019. In this role, they were a part of the controls and autonomous driving research team and worked on simulating vehicles and analyzing vehicle dynamics data using machine learning models.

Additionally, Fernando was involved with WATonomous, where they held several roles. Fernando was a Path Planning Team Mentor from February 2019 to April 2019, a Path Planning Team Lead from September 2018 to January 2019, and a Software Team Core Member from June 2018 to September 2018. Their work at WATonomous mainly focused on controls, simulations, and path planning.

Earlier in their career, Fernando worked at Bosch Rexroth as an Application Engineering from May 2017 to April 2018 and at John Bear Buick GMC as a Junior Account Manager from August 2016 to April 2017. Fernando also had experience with McMaster Engineering EcoCAR 3 as a Controls and Simulations Engineering Team Member from September 2015 to April 2017. In this role, they contributed to the project of turning a Chevrolet Camaro into a hybrid electric vehicle, utilizing Matlab/Simulink models and conducting failure analysis.

Fernando's professional journey started at Fossil Group, Inc., where they worked as a Sales/Stock Associate from June 2013 to August 2016.

Overall, Fernando Barrios has a strong background in technical roles, especially in the fields of artificial intelligence, vehicle systems, controls, and simulations. Fernando has a demonstrated track record of involvement in research, development, and project management, making him a valuable asset in the industry.

Fernando Barrios completed their high school education at Bishop Reding High School from 2009 to 2013. Fernando then pursued a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Software (Embedded Systems) Engineering with a minor in Economics at McMaster University from 2013 to 2017. Following this, they attended the University of Waterloo from 2018 to 2019, where they earned a Master of Applied Science degree in Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering.

Currently, Fernando is enrolled at McMaster University and is expected to complete their Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Mechanical Engineering from 2021 to 2026.

In addition to their formal education, Fernando Barrios has obtained several certifications. Fernando received the Design for Six Sigma Black Belt (DFSS) certification from General Motors in September 2021, along with the Design for Six Sigma Green Belt (DFSS) certification in June 2021. Fernando has also achieved certifications from Scaled Agile, Inc., including Certified SAFe® 5 Scrum Master in November 2021, Certified SAFe® 5 Lean Portfolio Manager in July 2021, and Certified SAFe® 5 Agilist in June 2021.
