Stephen McNair

Senior Research Fellow at Learning and Work Institute

Stephen McNair is an accomplished educational researcher and consultant with extensive experience in adult learning and demographic change. Since 2011, Stephen has served as Vice-chair of the Scientific Advisory Board for the EU Joint Programming Initiative on Demography. At the Learning & Work Institute, Stephen has held the position of Senior Research Fellow, focusing on older learners and chairing the National Older Learners Group. Previously, Stephen was Associate Director, leading initiatives on older people's learning, and has worked as a consultant on age, work, and careers since 2002. As an Adviser for the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and a former Research Associate for the UK Commission for Employment and Skills, Stephen contributed to understanding the older labor market. Additionally, Stephen has held significant academic leadership roles, including Head of the School of Education at the University of Surrey and Director of Research at the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education. Stephen's career began as County Adult Education Officer for Essex County Council and is underpinned by a BA in English from the University of York.
