Janine Jan has a diverse work history in the legal field. Janine began their career as a Summer Law Student in the Ministry of the Attorney General's Policy Division in 2009, specializing in Aboriginal Law. The following year in 2010, they returned to the ministry as a Summer Law Student in the Crown Law Office (Civil), continuing their focus on Aboriginal Law. In 2011, they became a Student-at-Law in the same office, gaining valuable experience. Janine'snext position was with Legal Aid Ontario, where they served as a Criminal Duty Counsel from November 2012 to March 2014. After a brief period as a Staff Lawyer from April 2014 to June 2015, they transitioned to the role of Family Duty Counsel from July 2015 to August 2018. Janine then returned to Legal Aid Ontario as a Criminal Duty Counsel, a position they still hold as of March 2017.
Janine Jan obtained their Honours Bachelor of Arts with Specialization in Psychology from the University of Ottawa, where they also pursued a minor in Women's Studies from 2004 to 2008. In 2008, they attended the University of Saskatchewan for the Program of Legal Studies for Native People. Later, they obtained a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Ottawa in 2011. Currently, Janine is enrolled at York University - Osgoode Hall Law School, pursuing a Certificate in Adjudication for Administrative Agencies, Boards & Tribunals, which they are expected to complete in 2023.
