Gay Sohl-Wahlstrom began their work experience in 1989, when they worked as a Docent in Public Relations for Kennard & Ferguson Homes and the State of Nebraska. In 1988, they also worked as a Special Education Teacher for Grades K-5 and a District Consultant for Students with Hearing Impairments in Beatrice Public Schools. Gay then joined Lincoln Public Schools in 1989 and took on various roles, including being a Special Education Teacher for Grades K-5 and later becoming a Team Leader and Teacher for Grades 4th, 5th, and 6th. Gay also served as an Administrator in Elementary Student Services Coordinator and Elementary Assistant Principal. Gay continued to work for Lincoln Public Schools until the present.
Gay Sohl-Wahlstrom earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary and Special Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1982 to 1988. Gay later obtained a Master of Education (MEd) in Education Administration from the same institution. In 2018, Gay obtained a Nebraska Educator's Certificate/Permit with a Standard Administrative Certificate from the Nebraska Department of Education.
