Gwen Smith has been working in various roles since 1996. Gwen began their career as the Programming Director at Q-View, Inc., where they provided the overall vision for programming within the then-largest forum area on America Online, and managed message boards and chats. In 1999, they moved to PlanetOut Partners, Inc., where they became a Community Host, providing the overall vision for programming within their community area, updating, editing, writing, and/or re-purposing content, and recruiting volunteer staff. In 2006, they began working as an Administrative Assistant at Consolidated Engineering Laboratories, where they worked on marketing materials to promote the firm, including consulting on their web presence. In 2010, they became the Managing Editor at Genderfork.com, where they edited and submitted user- and staff-generated daily content updates using a Wordpress backend. In 2018, they began working at LGBTQ NATION as a Freelance Writer, preparing daily news content and regular articles for the site's Health & Wellness section. Gwen also worked as the Sunday Editor at The New Civil Rights Movement, writing and editing all Sunday news articles for the site. In 2019, they began working as a Land Product Specialist at Linden Lab, providing world-class support to the company's highest-value customers utilizing multiple support routes. Gwen Smith also has been providing Bay Area Reporter with a bimonthly 950-word column called "Transmissions" since 2000.

Gwen Smith attended Pasadena City College from 1986 to 1988, studying Graphic Design and English.
