S Sonmez, P.E., CxA, CEM has a diverse work experience in the field of engineering. They started their career in 1998 as a Mechanical Engineer at Lizardos Engineering Associates, P.C., where they were responsible for HVAC system design and production for various commercial buildings. They also conducted site visits and managed paperwork during the construction administration phase. In 2006, they joined SGM Engineering as a Project Manager and Mechanical Engineer, overseeing projects in healthcare facilities, military bases, and public schools. Their responsibilities included project management, quality checks, construction administration, and client interactions. In 2010, they returned to Lizardos Engineering Associates, P.C. as an Associate, and later became an Associate Vice President in 2016. Additionally, since 2012, they have been serving as an Associate Professor at Everglades University.

S. Sonmez, P.E., CxA, CEM completed their education in a chronological order. From 1991 to 1995, they attended the New York Institute of Technology and earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering. They then pursued further education and obtained a Master of Science (MS) in Energy Management from the same institute from 1996 to 1998.

In addition to their formal education, Sonmez has obtained several certifications. In May 2008, they became a Professional Engineer (P.E.) through the State of New York and State of Florida. They also hold certifications in Certified Building Commissioning Professional from the Association of Energy Engineers (obtained in May 2017), Certified Energy Manager (C.E.M) from the Association of Energy Engineers (obtained in July 2016), LEED AP Building Design and Construction from the U.S. Green Building Council (obtained in March 2004), Building Electrical Design from New York University (obtained in February 1999), and an Advanced Certificate in Facilities Management from NYIT - Center for Energy Policy and Research (obtained in December 1997).
