Eric Neumayer

Professor Eric Neumayer became LSE’s inaugural Pro-Director Faculty Development in September 2016. In this role he oversees and takes a lead on the School’s policies and practices with respect to recruitment, review, promotion, pay and career development of all academic staff, working closely with the other members of the School Management Committee and with the Vice-Chair of the Appointments Committee and Heads of Department. Before taking on this role, he served the School first as Head of the Department of Geography & Environment and then as its Vice-Chair of the Appointments Committee. He is also a Professor of Environment and Development in the Department of Geography and Environment.

He studied economics, political science and development studies in Germany and at the LSE. His main research interests lie in environmental economics, international political economy and quantitative research methods. He has published widely in a range of journals across different social science disciplines and he is the author of four books, most recently Robustness Tests for Quantitative Research (with Thomas Plümper), Cambridge University Press 2017.

He is proud to have won a teaching prize at the occasion of his Major Review (LSE’s equivalent to a tenure review) and regards excellence in teaching/education and excellence in research as equally important for fulfilling LSE’s mission, which is ‘to know the causes of things for the betterment of society’.
