R. Vanessa Alvarado serves as Deputy City Attorney and General Counsel for the Municipal Branch of the Office of the Los Angeles City Attorney since January 2008. R. Vanessa Alvarado has held various roles, including oversight of Tobacco Enforcement Operations, collaborating with law enforcement and regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with tobacco laws, and serving as the Neighborhood Prosecutor for LAPD's Newton Community Station, focusing on community issues in South Los Angeles. Additionally, R. Vanessa Alvarado worked on the Citywide Nuisance Abatement Program and in the Central Trials and Appellate Division. Prior experience includes positions as Staff Attorney at the Learning Rights Law Center and Watsonville Law Center, where R. Vanessa Alvarado managed programs and clinics addressing legal needs for vulnerable populations. Educational credentials include a JD in Public Interest Law and Policy from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a BA in History from Stanford University.
