Before becoming a member of the 2020 NBA Champion’s coaching staff, Phil Handy served as an assistant coach for the Toronto Raptors, following five seasons in the same role with the Cleveland Cavaliers (2013-18). Overall, he has coached in each of the last six NBA Finals, winning titles with the Lakers, Raptors and Cavaliers in 2020, 2019 and 2016, respectively. A native of San Leandro, Handy returns to the Lakers after spending 2011-13 as an assistant coach.

The team originated in as the Minneapolis Lakers, moved to Los Angeles prior to the 1960 season. In their time in Los Angeles, the Lakers have called the Sports Arena, The Great Western Forum and STAPLES Center home.
