Dean-Lorenz Szumylo has a diverse work experience spanning over multiple roles and organizations.
Dean-Lorenz began their career as an AmeriCorps*Vista with the Urban Ecology Institute in 2002.
From 2001 to 2005, they served as a Program Manager for the Environmental Studies Program at Boston College, where they managed budgets and grants and supervised research projects on wild coyotes.
Dean-Lorenz then founded and served as the Managing Editor of the Cities and the Environment Journal from 2004 to 2007, where they oversaw the peer-review process and recruited contributing staff.
From 2007 to 2008, they worked as a GIS Analyst at ESA Adolfson, producing high-quality GIS analyses, maps, and database products for environmental science projects.
Dean-Lorenz then joined the Cascade Land Conservancy, now Forterra, as a GIS Analyst from 2008 to 2009, where they developed geospatial analyses to identify conservation opportunities.
In 2009, they joined the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at the MassTech Collaborative as a GIS Analyst, conducting spatial assessments of broadband internet service availability and subscription.
Starting from 2014, they served as a Member of the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Community Kitchen, a non-profit organization empowering culinary entrepreneurs in Charlotte, NC.
From 2010 to 2019, they worked as a GIS Specialist at the NOAA Greater Atlantic Regional Fisheries Office (GARFO) through contracts with Lynker Technologies and Integrated Statistics. Dean-Lorenz established a GIS program and built authoritative datasets for marine regulated areas.
Currently, Dean-Lorenz Szumylo holds the position of Pacific Northwest Regional Lead / Program Manager at Lynker since 2016. Dean-Lorenz recruits, hires and manages staff, promotes diversity and inclusion, and provides institutional support to Lynker employees serving NOAA offices. Dean-Lorenz also promotes innovation-sharing among staff working across NOAA’s regions and divisions.
Dean-Lorenz Szumylo earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Boston College in 2002. In 2001, they also completed a semester abroad at Rhodes University, studying Ecology. Subsequently, they pursued a Master of Environmental Management degree in Conservation Science & Policy at Duke University from 2005 to 2007.
