Jonathan Baell

Executive Director, Discovery Chemistry at Lyterian Therapeutics

Jonathan Baell has a diverse work experience in the field of medicinal chemistry. Jonathan started their career as a Research Scientist at CSIRO Division of Animal Health in 1991 and later worked as a Senior Research Scientist at CSIRO Animal Health Research Laboratories from 1994 to 1996. From 1996 to 2000, they served as a Senior Research Scientist at Biomolecular Research Institute, where they focused on the design and synthesis of peptidomimetics. In 2001, they joined Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research as a Medicinal Chemistry Laboratory Head, leading drug discovery initiatives in various disease areas and establishing high-quality HTS libraries.

In 2008, Baell became the National Medicinal Chemistry Leader at CRC for Cancer Therapeutics. Jonathan then founded their own company, Baell Medchem Consultancy, in the same year, where they provided medicinal chemistry consulting services.

Baell joined Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2012 as a Research Professor in Medicinal Chemistry and also served as the Director of The Australian Translational Medicinal Chemistry Facility (ATMCF). In this role, they engaged biological collaborators to develop small molecule therapeutics and worked on drug candidate optimization and access to contract research organizations in China.

In 2016, they became a Distinguished Visiting Professor at Nanjing Tech University, where they continued to contribute to the field of medicinal chemistry. Most recently, Baell joined Lyterian Therapeutics in 2023 as the Executive Director of Early Leads Chemistry.

Jonathan Baell completed their Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medicinal and Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Tasmania in 1986. Jonathan then pursued a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Pharmaceutics and Drug Design at the University of Melbourne, which they completed in 1992.
