Dr. Ostlie specializes in minimally invasive and laparoscopic pediatric and neonatal surgery, thoracic and oncologic surgery, chest wall deformities, hernia surgery, surgical critical care and trauma and hypospadias repair. He also specializes in complex neonatal surgical diseases, difficult problems with the esophagus and gastroesophageal reflux, and surgical critical care of infants and children.
Prior to joining Phoenix Children’s, Dr. Ostlie served as surgeon in chief at American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison, WI, and held professor of Surgery and professor of Pediatrics positions at University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. Dr. Ostlie completed his residency in general surgery at Mayo Clinic Scottsdale from 1995 to 2000. Following fellowships at Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK, and Children’s Mercy Hospital, Kansas City, MO, he served at Children’s Mercy as a staff surgeon and numerous leadership roles including vice chair of the Department of Surgery and program director of the Pediatric Surgery Residency
Dr. Ostlie has extensive research experience focused on evidence-based pediatric surgery. He has participated as the primary investigator or co-investigator in more than 20 prospective randomized controlled trials in infants and children.
He is a graduate of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, Grand Forks ND. He holds certification from the American Board of Surgeons in pediatric surgery, surgical critical care, and general surgery.
