Dr. Nichol earned her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in 1962. She completed a general rotating internship at Madison General Hospital and a pediatric residency at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and UW Department of Pediatrics. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship in virology at the Hartford Research Lab with Dr. James Cherry.
Dr. Nichol went into private practice in 1968 and left in 1993 to take a position as Vice President of Medical Affairs at St. Mary’s Hospital of Milwaukee, and later, Vice President of Medical Affairs at Columbia-St. Mary’s in Milwaukee. She was the first female to practice at the Dean Clinic and the first female chief of staff at St. Mary’s Hospital.
She has served in numerous leadership roles, including district chair for the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), president of the Wisconsin Chapter of the AAP, member of the board of directors of Housing Initiatives, Inc., and the Dane County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Dr. Nichol has authored or co-authored numerous studies in Pediatrics and was instrumental in implementing national legislation mandating infant car seats.
