Leslie Lenert

Associate Vice President, Data Science And Informatics at Medical University of South Carolina

Leslie Lenert has a diverse and extensive work experience in various medical and academic institutions. From 1990 to 1997, they worked as an Assistant Professor at Stanford University Medical School. Leslie then joined the Veterans Medical Research Foundation as a Researcher from 1997 to 2007. During this time, they also served as the Director of Health Services Research at the Veterans Affairs San Diego Health System. From 2005 to 2007, they held the role of Associate Director of Medical Informatics at the California institute of telecommunications and information technology (CALIT2), where they helped launch an interdisciplinary institute.

In 2007, Lenert became the Director of the National Center for Public Health Informatics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Leslie then joined UCSD as a Professor of Medicine from 1998 to 2007. In 2010, they became the Associate Chair for Quality and Innovation in the Department of Medicine and a Professor of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Utah School of Medicine until 2013.

Lenert also had roles at the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) as a Committee Member of the Health Information Technology Advisory Committee (HITAC) from 2017 to 2022. From 2013 to the present, they have been a Vice President Medicine and Chief Medical Officer at Health Sciences South Carolina. Additionally, they have held several positions at the Medical University of South Carolina, including Chief Research Information Officer, Distinguished Professor of Internal Medicine, and currently, Associate Vice President of Data Science and Informatics. Since 2019, they have also served as the Assistant Provost for Data Science and Informatics at the Medical University of South Carolina.

Leslie Lenert, MD, MS, FACP, FACMI, obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of California, Riverside, from 1977 to 1981. Following that, they pursued a Doctor of Medicine degree at UCLA from 1981 to 1984. Later, they attended Stanford University School of Medicine from 1987 to 1990, earning a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Informatics.
