Janeen Uzzell

Janeen Uzzell is a board member at MERCY SHIPS. Janeen has also served as the Chief Operating Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation from January 2019 to June 2021.

At the Wikimedia Foundation, Janeen was responsible for ensuring the organizations resources and efforts are effectively directed to sustain and grow Wikipedia’s content and users, as well as tasked with leading the integration of the organizations core programmatic priorities across departments, setting and driving measurable advances against organizational goals, clarifying the operational model and practices, and advancing the strategic vision.

The Wikimedia Foundation is the non-profit organization that supports and hosts Wikipedia (the #5 website in the world), and several other Wikimedia free knowledge sites. Every month, the Wikimedia sites are accessed by nearly 1.5 billion unique devices. Wikipedia consists of more than 40 million articles across hundreds of languages. Every month, more than 250,000 volunteer editors contribute to Wikipedia.

At the Foundation, they build technology to help people everywhere access Wikipedia, across devices and in nearly 300 languages. They engineer privacy for their readers and editors so they can safely and securely explore Wikipedia. They create programs and initiatives to make Wikipedia freely available to more people in more parts of the world. They build new tools for the community of editors so they can continue to improve and grow Wikipedia.

Janeen Uzzell received a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Janeen then went on to earn their Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Management and International Business from Fairleigh Dickinson University. Janeen is also Six Sigma certified.
