Joy Hawkins has a diverse work experience. Joy started their career as the Director of the Ga State Senate Research Office from 1990 to 1995. Joy then worked as a consultant for the Ga. Commission on Family Violence associated with the Ga. Judiciary from 2000 to 2002. In 2003, they served as the Deputy COO for both the Office of Governor Sonny Perdue and the Georgia Governor's Office. From 2005 until present, they have been the VP of Education at the Metro Atlanta Chamber. Additionally, they have also held the role of VP Regional Education at the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce.

Joy Hawkins attended Georgia State University College of Law from 1983 to 1987, where they obtained a JD degree in law. Joy also attended Georgia State University from 1981 to 1987, although no specific degree or field of study is mentioned for this period.
