Scott then attended Antioch University from 1967 to 1972, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art. Following this, they joined the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1975 and completed both their Master of Arts and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science by 1981.
