Matthew Farlin has a long history of work experience, beginning in 1994 when they were a Senior Legislative Assistant in the Missouri House of Representatives. In 1996, they became the Director of Community Relations and Development at Sallee/Ward Investments, Inc. In 1997, they created Farlin-Ince & Associates, where they specialized in newsletters, pamphlets, flyers and business guides. In 1998, they created The Pointe, Inc, a community newspaper corporation. In 2000, they became Mayor and City Administrator of the City of Grain Valley, where they planned, organized and directed city operations, staffing, resources, facilities and equipment. In 2005, they joined the American Cancer Society as a Legislative Government Relations Director in Missouri. In 2011, they became an Executive Team Member at Office Products Alliance. Finally, in 2015, they became Communications Manager at Midwest Public Risk.

Matthew Farlin has a long and varied educational history. In 1982, they earned a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Journalism from the University of Central Missouri. Matthew then continued their studies at Missouri State University, where they were a Masters Candidate in Communication from 1990 to 1992. In 1995, they earned a Certification in Economic Development from Heartland Economic Development. In 2003, they obtained a Certification in WMD/Senior Officials Workshop on Terrorism Incident Preparedness from the National Emergency Response & Rescue Training Center. Finally, in 2004, they earned a Certified Public Manager (CPM) from The University of Kansas.
