Jo Halvard Halleraker

Chief Engineer at Norwegian Environment Agency

Jo Halvard Halleraker has extensive work experience in various roles related to environmental management and engineering. Jo Halvard started their career as an Avdelingsingeniør at NINA from November 1992 to July 1994. After that, they worked as a Research Scientist at the Geological Survey of Norway from September 1994 to August 1997, where they collaborated internationally on ecogeochemical mapping. Subsequently, they joined SINTEF as a Research Scientist from 1997 to 2008, focusing on research and development in the field of Ecohydraulics, Ecohydrology, Habitat modeling, and Environmental flow. In 2006, they became a Senior Advisor at the Norwegian Directorate for Nature Management, where they worked until July 2013. During this period, they gained expertise in regulated water bodies' management, endangered nature type management in freshwater, and the application of remote sensing in nature management. Since July 2013, they have been serving as the Chief Engineer at the Norwegian Environment Agency, specifically in the Water Resources and Knowledge department. In this role, they have been involved in the implementation of sustainable water management and has taken on various responsibilities, including being the project leader for a national river restoration action plan. Jo Halvard has also been integrated into international endeavors such as co-chairing the ATG on Hydromorphology as part of the Common Implementation Strategy for the Water Framework Directive. Additionally, since November 2018, Jo Halvard Halleraker has been a Guest Scientist at NTNU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, primarily working on an OFFPHD-project related to ecosystem-based management. Since January 2019, they have also served as a Fagmedarbeider at Store norske leksikon, contributing relevant articles on topics related to nature and environmental management, water science, geokchemistry, ecology, and sustainability.

Jo Halvard Halleraker completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Ecosystem based hydropower management from the NTNU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. This educational journey took place from 2018 to 2023. Prior to this, they studied at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (UMB) from 1986 to 1992, where they earned a Cand agric degree in Natural Resources/Conservation, General.
