James Chartres has a diverse work experience across multiple industries. James started their career as a Visiting Researcher at Universität Stuttgart from 2004 to 2006. James then worked as a Student Affairs Co-ordinator at the Summer Session Program, International Space University in Beijing from June 2007 to September 2007. After that, they worked as an Operational Concept Analyst at the Research Institute for Advanced Computer Science RIACS, University Space Research Association from November 2007 to December 2008.
In 2009, James joined Carnegie Mellon Innovations Laboratory (CMIL) at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley as a Research Staff member, serving until December 2012. Following this, they became an Engineering Specialist II at Jacobs Technology from January 2013 to December 2013.
James then transitioned to Millennium Engineering and Integration in 2013, initially as a Project Systems Engineer for the Edison Demonstration of SmallSat Networks (EDSN) project from December 2013 to November 2015. From November 2015 to November 2018, they held the position of Project Systems Engineer for the BioSentinel Mission. Subsequently, they took on the role of Project Systems Engineer for the Air Traffic Management – eXploration (ATM-X) Project in November 2018. James was promoted to the position of Chief Engineer - MEI Services in January 2017, where they provided technical guidance, mentoring, and supervision to a staff of over 150 people, as well as serving as a consultant and technical reviewer on various NASA projects.
Aside from their engineering work, James founded Kanga Motorsports in May 2014. This organization offers online resources, such as videos and articles, for individuals interested in motorsports. And from December 2016 to August 2020, they served as a Content Creator & Social Media Marketer for the Sports Car Club of America - San Francisco Region, focusing on increasing participation in amateur racing through digital and print content creation.
Throughout their career, James has demonstrated expertise in space systems, project management, technology development, software engineering, and motorsports.
James Chartres completed their education in a chronological order. James began with a Bachelor's degree in Engineering, specializing in Mechatronics, at the University of Adelaide from 2000 to 2003. Following this, they pursued further studies at the same university and obtained a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from 2004 to 2007. Additionally, James attended the International Space University in 2006 for a summer session program in Life Sciences.
