Acting Deputy Chief Executive Strategic Policy & Programmes at Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment

Oliver Valins is currently acting DCE for the Strategic Policy and Programmes (SPP) Group. The group supports the Senior Leadership Team to set MBIE’s strategic policy and develop its strategic priorities; leads MBIE’s regulatory stewardship program and co-leads with Te Puni Kōkiri, the Government’s Māori economic development strategy - He kai kei aku ringa. This group also houses Better for Business, Pasifika Policy and the Government Centre for Dispute Resolution.

These are strategically important programmes that require significant leadership and/or shaping from the Chief Executive and collaboration across MBIE.

Oliver’s substantive role is the Head of the Office of the Chief Executive at MBIE. Prior to this he was the Deputy Chief Executive, Strategy and Corporate at Crown Law. He worked for almost 10 years at the New Zealand Treasury, with positions ranging from managing the Justice and Security team to being the Treasury representative on New Zealand’s United Nations Climate Change negotiations team.

Oliver holds a PhD in Geography from the University of Glasgow.
