Sjoerd Smit currently serves as the Deputy Head of Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Norway and Iceland since August 2021. Prior to this role, Sjoerd acted as the Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Sudan from August 2017 to August 2021, leading a policy team focused on critical issues such as peace, security, migration, and economic diplomacy. Sjoerd's earlier experience includes serving as the Deputy Head of the Business Climate and Markets Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands from January 2013 to July 2017, and positions at the Dutch Embassy in Addis Ababa and Khartoum, where responsibilities included political advising and peacebuilding efforts. Sjoerd’s career began at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, working on arms control and export issues. Educational credentials include a Master of Science in International Relations from The London School of Economics and Political Science and a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of Groningen.
