Mattias Varem is a diplomat currently serving as a Desk Officer at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Estonia since September 2019. Previously, Varem worked as an EU advisor for the Estonian Ministry of the Interior from October 2018 to August 2019, and as a Junior Analyst at the European Union Institute for Security Studies from September 2017 to March 2018. Varem also gained experience as an intern at Kreab in 2017, focusing on policy research, and as an intern reporter for Estonia’s main news program, Aktuaalne Kaamera, during the summer of 2015. Early professional experience includes volunteering as an English teacher in Bogota at Gimasio Britanico in 2014. Varem holds a Master’s Degree in International Relations and Affairs from IE Business School (2016-2017) and a Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Journalism with a minor in International Relations from the University of Tartu (2013-2016).
