ML Alignment & Theory Scholars
Christian Smith serves as the Co-Executive Director of MATS Research, Inc., managing the ML Alignment & Theory Scholars Program since June 2022. In addition, Christian co-founded and serves as a Board Member for the London Initiative for Safe AI, a prominent center for AI safety research established in March 2023. Previous experience includes roles in various organizations focused on effective altruism, education, and research, such as the Centre for Effective Altruism, where Christian coordinated events and facilitated movement-building projects. Early research positions at CERN and SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory involved advanced scientific projects. Christian earned a Bachelor of Science degree in the Pedagogy of Physics from Stanford University in 2020.

ML Alignment & Theory Scholars
MATS is an educational seminar and independent research program that aims to provide talented scholars with talks, workshops, and research mentorship in the field of AI safety, and connect them with the Berkeley AI safety research community. Past mentors include researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, MIRI, ARC, CHAI, CAIS, Centre on Long-Term Risk, and more. MATS alumni have joined Anthropic, MIRI, ARC Evals, and CHAI, and founded several AI safety organisations, including Apollo Research, Leap Labs, and a new MIRI division.
