Laura Vaughan is currently the Research Management Lead at MATS. Prior to this role, Laura worked as a Software Engineer at sharky.fi and as an NFT developer at Solana Blockchain. Laura has also experience as a Thiel Fellow at The Thiel Foundation, Cofounder and CTO at Acorn Biolabs, and as a Bioinformatics Student at the Ontario Cancer Institute. With a background in Physics, Biophysics, and Computer Science, Laura also worked as a Junior Interactive Designer at designstor, where she designed user interfaces and visual assets for interactive applications.

MATS is an educational seminar and independent research program that aims to provide talented scholars with talks, workshops, and research mentorship in the field of AI safety, and connect them with the Berkeley AI safety research community. Past mentors include researchers from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google DeepMind, MIRI, ARC, CHAI, CAIS, Centre on Long-Term Risk, and more. MATS alumni have joined Anthropic, MIRI, ARC Evals, and CHAI, and founded several AI safety organisations, including Apollo Research, Leap Labs, and a new MIRI division.
