Stefanii Ruta Atkins

Head Registrar at MoMA

Stefanii Ruta Atkins joined The Museum of Modern Art as an assistant registrar in 1996. After holding progressive positions working on exhibitions, collections, and outgoing loans, she was named Head Registrar in 2010. In this role, she leads the Department of Collection Management and Exhibition Registration, overseeing policies related to collection care and activities in Art Handling and Preparation, with responsibility for the safe installation, packing, and storage of loan and collection objects, and the Office of the Registrar, which documents and manages the collection, administers the outgoing loan program, and coordinates loans. During her time at MoMA, Ruta Atkins has led a review of packing and crating specs, for which she was awarded a Lee Tenenbaum Award, and she is currently supporting MoMA’s commitment to sustainability through the integration of new technologies and expansion of environmentally sound practices. In 2011–12, she taught the Management and Registration of Art and Artifact Collections course at New York University School of Professional Studies. Before joining MoMA, Atkins was the collection manager at the Brooklyn Historical Society. She received her BA in art history and French from Hofstra University in 1991.
