Amy West

Synchro Program Manager at Monterey Bay Aquariam Research Institute

Amy first came to MBARI in 2001 as an engineering intern studying remote underwater video techniques, and worked in various MBARI labs for a short stint. She again joined MBARI as a science communication intern in 2011. In 2023, she became Synchro’s program manager, a program housed within CeNCOOS that harnesses the power of a massive collaboration to synchronize low-cost sensor solutions with resource management needs in the face of climate change. Her marine scientist background spans two decades of working on a diverse array of marine, aquatic fieldwork around the globe, primarily in fisheries and deep-sea ecology. As a science communicator and reporting fellow for Mongabay and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution she has published many science stories and videos for universities, newspapers, print, and government. Most recently she worked as a project director for five years in a private-public partnership aimed at curbing illegal fishing worldwide through a co-designed approach. Her science training and field research helps her guide scientists and conservation organizations to communicate more effectively outside their circles.
