Ellen Umeda

Senior Aquarist at Monterey Bay Aquarium

Ellen Umeda is an experienced marine biologist and aquarist currently serving as a Senior Aquarist at Monterey Bay Aquarium since June 2015. Key achievements include being part of the opening team for the Into the Deep exhibition, leading deep sea collections in collaboration with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and cultivating numerous jellyfish and deep-sea species. Ellen has a strong background in husbandry, intern mentorship, and public engagement through collaboration with social media and PR teams. Previously, Ellen held positions at Ripley's Aquarium of Canada, contributing to its establishment, and began professional training at Monterey Bay Aquarium where responsibilities ranged from maintaining exhibit health to conducting scientific research. Ellen earned a Bachelor's degree in Ecology from UC San Diego and participated in an education abroad program in marine biology at The University of Queensland, alongside a recent certificate in Japanese Language from Monterey Peninsula College.
