Jelle De Smet has a diverse work experience. Jelle started their career as a co-founder and (vice-)president of SID Ghent-Lowlands Student Branch in 2009, where they served until 2016. In 2009, they also began working as a PhD student, focusing on smart contact lenses and embedding LCD technology in them. Jelle completed their PhD in 2014 and gave a TEDx talk on the subject. From 2014 to 2016, Jelle worked as a postdoctoral researcher at the Centre for Microsystems Technology, imec & Ghent University, where they were responsible for smart contact lens research and attracting funding. In 2016, they founded Morrow Eyewear, where they served as the Chief Technology Officer, applying nanotechnology to create innovative eyewear. In 2023, Jelle joined OIP Space Instruments as a Program Manager.
Jelle De Smet completed their education with a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Engineering from Ghent University, from the year 2009 to 2014. Prior to that, Jelle De Smet obtained a bachelor's degree in Engineering, referred to as "ir.", from Ghent University, which was pursued from 2001 to 2007. Their earlier education can be traced back to Koninklijk Atheneum Aalst, where Jelle De Smet attended from 1995 to 2001, though no specific degree or field of study was mentioned during this period.
