Chicago Region Trees Initiative - Stewardship Coordinator at Morton Arboretum

Amelia (Mia) Howerton is an accomplished environmental professional with diverse experience in stewardship, outreach, and education. Currently serving as the Stewardship Coordinator for the Chicago Region Trees Initiative at The Morton Arboretum since February 2022, Mia has effectively led volunteer habitat restoration events and integrated with restoration crews. Prior to this, Mia was an AmeriCorps Field Associate at Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust, where responsibilities included co-leading a high school internship focused on environmental careers and participating in a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion task force. Additional experiences include roles at Northwestern University as a COVID-19 Support Associate, animal care at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, and research at Loyola University Chicago, culminating in a BA in Environmental Studies and a history minor. Notable achievements include co-authorship of a journal article in Nature Sustainability and a presentation at the Ecological Society of America conference.
