Susan Lagg-May has over 30 years of work experience in various roles within nonprofit organizations. Susan began their career as the Executive Director of the La Crosse Symphony Orchestra from 1989 to 1991. Susan then served as the Executive Director of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra from 1991 to 1994. In 1995, they joined the Sarasota Ballet of Florida as the Executive Director (interim) Finance Manager and Development Associate until 1997. Susan then became the Systems Administrator for the Florida West Coast Symphony, now known as the Sarasota Orchestra, where they worked from 1997 to 2007. Following this, they became the Chief Operating Officer of the Van Wezel Foundation at the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall from 2007 to 2012. Currently, Susan is the Director of Donor Data Management at Mote Marine Laboratory, a position they have held since December 2012.
Susan Lagg-May completed their education in a progressive manner, starting with obtaining a high school diploma from Delavan-Darien High School from 1972 to 1976. Following their graduation, they pursued their Bachelor's degree in Music at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, spanning from 1983 to 1987. Subsequently, they enrolled at the Wisconsin School of Business for their MA-Business degree in Arts Administration, which they earned between 1987 and 1989.

Founded in 1955, Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 research organization based in Sarasota, Fla., with additional field stations in eastern Sarasota Countye and the Florida Keys. Mote is dedicated to today’s research for tomorrow’s oceans with an emphasis on world-class research relevant to conservation and sustainable use of marine biodiversity, healthy habitats and natural resources. Research programs include studies of human cancer using marine models, the effects of man-made and natural toxins on humans and on the environment, the health of wild fisheries, developing sustainable and successful fish restocking techniques and food production technologies and the development of ocean technology to help us better understand the health of the environment. Mote research programs also focus on understanding the population dynamics of manatees, dolphins, sea turtles, sharks and coral reefs and on conservation and restoration efforts related to these species and ecosystems. Mote’s vision includes positively impacting public policy through science-based outreach and education.
