Sophie Murguia

Sophie Murguia is a seasoned editorial professional with extensive experience in journalism and fact-checking. Currently serving as Deputy Managing Editor and previously as Research Editor at Mother Jones since January 2022, Sophie has demonstrated strong leadership in editorial capacities. Before returning to Mother Jones, Sophie held the role of Culture Editor at Outside from January 2020 to December 2021, where responsibilities included setting editorial goals and managing pitch meetings as well as editing contributions from freelancers and columnists. Additional experience includes serving as Assistant Editor at Outside, overseeing fact-checking processes, and working as Research Editor at Pacific Standard Magazine, where Sophie managed the fact-checking and legal review process. Sophie's foundational experience includes reporting on immigration and politics as a Senior Editorial Fellow at Mother Jones. Academic credentials include a Bachelor’s Degree in English from Amherst College and a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University.
