Diccon started out working in local journalism. He was the business editor of U.S. 1, a weekly publication covering business in central New Jersey's high-tech Route 1 Corridor. He was previously an editor of community newspapers at Community News Service in Mercer County, New Jersey. His first job in journalism was as a reporter at the Middletown Transcript, a weekly newspaper in Delaware.

Diccon earned a Bachelor's degree in English at the University of Delaware, and cut his teeth in journalism there at The Review, the student newspaper, where he was a features editor.
