Laura Maccarelli has a diverse work experience in the field of conservation science. Laura started their career as a Conservation Scientist at Heritage Malta in 2011, where they were involved in various tasks such as sampling, analysis of samples using different techniques, and writing scientific reports. Laura then worked as a Conservation Scientist at Evolve Ltd for a brief period in 2012. Laura also volunteered as a Researcher at the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 2012, where they analyzed data from environmental monitoring and performed statistical analysis.

In 2012, Laura joined Alma Mater Studiorum Università di Bologna as a Lab Assistant, providing assistance to the lab. Laura then had an internship at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in 2013, where they conducted scientific examinations of museum objects using various analytical methodologies.

Laura continued their journey at LACMA and held different roles, starting as a Research Mellon Fellow from 2014 to 2017. In 2017, they were promoted to Assistant Conservation Scientist, a role they held until 2021. From 2021 to 2022, they served as an Associate Conservation Scientist. Currently, Laura is working at LACMA as the Head Scientist.

Throughout their career, Laura has gained expertise in scientific examination of museum objects, analytical methodologies such as digital microscopy, FT-IR, PLM, and micro-fade testing, HPLC analysis, statistical analysis, report processing, sample preparation, and writing scientific reports. Laura has also utilized techniques like FTIR, XRD, IC, SEM/EDS, and laser measurements using AutoCAD for structural damage assessment.

Laura Maccarelli completed their Bachelor's Degree in Technology for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna from 2003 to 2007. Laura then pursued a Master's Degree in Science and Technology for Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage from Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna, which they obtained from 2007 to 2010.
