Russell Zych has diverse work experience in the field of film and media preservation. In 2018, they worked as a Content Operations Assistant at Kanopy until 2019. From 2019 to 2020, they held the role of Film Traffic Intern at the Canyon Cinema Foundation. Later in 2019, they worked as a Video Editing Assistant at the University of California Office of the President. In 2021, they interned at Producers Library Services as a Film & Video Digitization Intern and also at The American Film Institute as a Catalog & Data Visualization Intern. From 2021 to 2022, they served as a Digital Content Assistant at the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Additionally, in 2022, Russell had various roles including Collection Information and Digital Assets Intern at Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), Web Archiving and Processing Intern at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and Special Projects Coordinator at UCLA Film & Television Archive.

Russell Zych started their education journey in 2014 at the University of California, Berkeley. Russell pursued a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree, majoring in Film & Media and Rhetoric. Russell successfully completed their undergraduate studies in 2018.

In 2020, Russell Zych continued to expand their knowledge and skills in the field of media archiving by enrolling at UCLA. Here, they pursued a Master of Library & Information Science (MLIS) degree, with a focus on Media Archival Studies. Russell dedicated two years to their graduate education, successfully completing their program in 2022.
