As the Chief Communications Officer, Duncan Phillips advances the National Geographic Society brand by delivering innovative communications campaigns that promote and amplify the Society’s mission, vision, people, programs and impact.
He leads the teams responsible for amplifying the Society’s programmatic work and community of National Geographic Explorers through owned, earned and social media channels. Phillips oversees the media relations efforts that generate momentum and enthusiasm for the National Geographic Museum of Exploration, as well as manages executive, internal and crisis communications for the organization to ensure connection to and protection of the brand.
Throughout his career at National Geographic, Phillips has led a number of critical functions at the organization. He previously served as Deputy to the Chief Communications, Marketing and Brand Officer, as well as Vice President of Strategic Communications.
Prior to joining the Society, Phillips advised a wide range of clients as part of the corporate advisory practice at global communications consultancy Hill & Knowlton. His areas of expertise included corporate positioning, media relations, internal communications, social media, content creation, and executive and crisis communications. His clients included Qualcomm, the International Olympic Committee, the Marine Corps and Deloitte. Previously, Phillips held roles at public relations firm The Hodges Partnership and in the front office of Major League Baseball’s Tampa Bay Rays.
Phillips holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism and English from the University of Richmond.
