Louis J. Gross serves as the Founding Director and Director Emeritus of the National Institute for Mathematical and Biological Synthesis (NIMBioS) since September 2008, where Gross was the Principal Investigator for a synthesis center funded by the National Science Foundation and co-sponsored by various federal departments. Concurrently, Gross holds the position of Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and Mathematics at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, directing the Institute for Environmental Modeling. Additional roles include membership on the Board on Life Sciences at the National Academies and service as Treasurer for the American Institute of Biological Sciences. Gross earned a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and Ecology and Systematics from Cornell University and a BS in Mathematics from Drexel University.

Our mission is to support research efforts and researchers across the globe within the fields of mathematics, biology, ecology, public health, the life sciences and more. Building on our history starting out as an NSF Synthesis Center we are now operating as an independent institute.
