NIGEB is a leading research institute in Iran that conducts cutting-edge research and education in various fields of biotechnology, such as agricultural, medical, industrial, and environmental biotechnology. Founded in 1989, NIGEB has three sub-institutes and nine departments, each dedicated to a highly innovative and pioneering investigation. NIGEB also provides specialized services, organizes symposiums and workshops, publishes scientific journals and books, and trains postgraduate students. NIGEB has a strong international presence and collaboration, with numerous joint projects and partnerships with foreign scientists, Iranians living abroad, and knowledge-based companies. NIGEB aims to advance the science and technology of biotechnology and contribute to national and global development and welfare.

Sub-institutes and departments of NIGEB:
1. Institute of Medical Biotechnology (IMB), which conducts the departments of Medical Genetics, Stem Cell, and Molecular Medicine
2. Institute of Industrial and Environmental Biotechnology (IIEB), which manages the departments of Bioprocess Engineering, Systems Biotechnology, and Energy and Environmental Biotechnology
3. Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (IAB), which runs the departments of Plant Bioproducts, Plant Molecular Biotechnology, and Animal Biotechnology
